La Gomera guided 2 days

La Gomera:

La Gomera, a small emerald in the Canary Islands archipelago, is adorned with surprising vegetation, rugged landscapes, and an authentic, tranquil, and welcoming soul.

Due to its mountainous character, La Gomera is much larger than one might imagine. It boasts numerous natural and cultural riches. The island is home to the best-preserved and largest laurel forest in the Canary Islands. Its biodiversity is astonishing, with 4182 species identified in an area of only 370 km2. It has the highest percentage of endemism in the Canary Islands: 50% of the species. To preserve this exceptional nature, many protected natural areas have been created, such as the Garajonay National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Orone Protected Landscape, the Valle Gran Rey Rural Park, the Roque Cano Natural Monument, the Cabrito Canyon... Spectacular and diverse landscapes! Along the trails, you can discover and admire them. Its culture, inherited from the early inhabitants, is equally surprising: the "silbo gomero," a whistled language also inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, its traditional music, gastronomy, and pottery made "without a wheel"... La Gomera is a concentration of nature and authenticity!

With its 650 km of trails (former communication routes of the islanders), La Gomera is a paradise for hikers! So, what better way to explore it than on foot!

Accommodation in San Sebastián

Discover San Sebastián, the charming capital of La Gomera, which also serves as the gateway to the island. When you disembark from the ferry, this is the town that welcomes you. Lively and authentically local, San Sebastián is a delightful destination. With two beaches, including a large beach in the heart of the town and a more wild one just a 10-minute walk from the center, it offers an idyllic setting for relaxation.

During the day, stroll through its historic center where you'll find bars, restaurants, shops, and its park housing the oldest monument on the island and in the Canary Islands, the "Torre del Conde." Everything is within easy reach, just a short walk away.

San Sebastián is strategically positioned for a short stay on the island, with its center just minutes away from the port. In the evening, a walk on its main square, the "Plaza de Las Américas," is truly enchanting. Vibrant and lively, it is a gathering place for families, friends, and children playing, offering an authentic glimpse into the local life of the island.

Immerse yourself in the warm atmosphere of San Sebastián, where history blends with friendliness, and let yourself be charmed by the island charm of this welcoming and lively town.

I will pick you up at the ferry (around 9:30), we will drop off the luggage at the hotel and then head straight to the starting point of the hike.

    Hiking route

For this first hike, discover the botanical jewel of the Canary Islands: the Garajonay National Park! This hike takes you through the wettest area of the island, where you will encounter the Los Tiles reservoir, adorned with a waterfall and a charming green stream. Admire the majestic El Cedro waterfall, standing at 250 meters high, where the endemic Canary pigeon, the "Paloma Rabiché," La Gomera's animal symbol, finds its home. Enter into a magnificent Laurisilva, an exceptional Laurel forest where trees reach heights of 30 meters!

With the enlightening explanations from your guide, you will see this forest in a new light, appreciating its incredible biodiversity and the ecological value of this unique ecosystem. The laurisilva harbors a rich variety of flora and fauna, including endemic species found nowhere else in the world.

Route through the South of La Gomera (Guarimiar canyon)

Guarimiar is, without a doubt, the most beautiful canyon in the south of La Gomera! Its wild landscapes are a typical characteristic of the island, offering an impressive visual experience.

This canyon is both spectacular and fascinating from a geological perspective. Formed by volcanic activity and rain erosion, it reveals pyroclasts, basaltic flows, basalt columns, and a deep, narrow ravine. It is La Gomera's grand canyon, a place that tells the volcanic history of the island and has shaped its cultural identity.

To survive in this rugged terrain, the inhabitants built impressive agricultural terraces and developed the "silbo gomero" to communicate over long distances. This hike, which can be of high, intermediate, or easy level depending on your choice, takes you through the charming and less frequented Guarimiar canyon.

Throughout the route, you will pass through beautiful palm groves. In the upper part, near Imada, you will discover ancient terraces where almond trees grow. In February, when they are in bloom, the valley transforms into an even more beautiful spectacle. In the lower part, you will find tropical trees such as mango, avocado, and papaya trees, adding an exotic touch to this unforgettable experience.
