Option 2 : Level Moderate/high: Royal Path from San Andrés to Puntallana

Follow the ancient royal path, which once served as the main artery connecting the charming Aridane Valley to the historic Santa Cruz. Here, the lush vegetation will transport you to a world of peace and natural beauty. As you descend on the west side, you will be enchanted by spectacular views of the Aridane Valley. The lush Laurisilva will gradually give way to a pine forest, creating a fascinating transition along your journey. At the end of this route, you will arrive at the Visitor Center of the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. Its visit is very informative as it provides details on the protected areas, geology, hydrology, and wildlife of the region. The center offers an exhibition that will immerse you in the natural richness of La Palma. Additionally, it has an educational botanical garden showcasing the region’s endemic plants.

Starting from El Jesús, you will begin the route by descending the Jorado ravine, a classified and protected area as a natural monument, until you reach a surprising cove. In this area, you will find small houses serving as second homes for the residents of Tijarafe, especially during the summer months. Subsequently, you will ascend and then descend through another ravine that will lead you to the captivating cove of Porís de Candelaria. It is a place with a fascinating history. This old fishing village located on a cliff has been a point of interest over time. With its picturesque houses also serving as second homes for the residents of the neighboring village, Porís de Candelaria is a unique gem on the island of La Palma. Its distinctive beauty and its location between the cliffs make it a charming place that reflects the traditional life of the island and its connection with the sea.
You will end this route in the charming village of Tijarafe, a place that also deserves to be visited and will add a special touch to your experience in this charming region of La Palma.

An excursion as beautiful as it is exciting!

You will discover a wide variety of plants and unique geological formations, such as plutonic rocks and pillow lava. It is undoubtedly the flagship route of La Palma.The Caldera de Taburiente trail, from Los Brecitos to Barranco de las Angustias, is one of the most remarkable and picturesque hikes on the island of La Palma.

The trail starts at Los Brecitos, known for its impressive views of the Caldera de Taburiente.

Next, the trail descends through the Barranco de las Angustias, following a well-marked path that winds through the mountainous terrain of the Caldera. During this stage, you can admire the diversity of the region’s flora and geology, including impressive rock formations and endemic vegetation.

As you progress along the path, you will enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Caldera de Taburiente, a monumental crater with walls reaching impressive heights. This part of the route offers the opportunity to appreciate the scale and natural beauty of this unique environment.

During the hike, you will discover various points of interest, such as natural viewpoints offering impressive views of the Caldera and its surroundings, intriguing geological formations, the interpretation center in the camping area, the famous “Cascade of Colors,” and opportunities to observe indigenous flora and fauna.

The Volcano Route in La Palma is an extraordinary experience that takes you through the island’s southern volcanic ridge, considered the most recent part from a geological perspective. The journey begins with a 500-meter ascent in the shade of pine trees, offering spectacular views of the Caldera de Taburiente, La Palma’s national park. Reaching the highest point at 1900 meters, the descent to the south begins along the ridges, passing from volcano to volcano. This crossing is considered one of the most iconic in the Canary Islands. During this hike, you will venture into a magical and lunar environment, where volcanic elements have shaped the landscape in a spectacular way. The changing topography will allow you to explore areas of lava flows, craters, and unique geological formations that bear witness to the past and present volcanic activity in La Palma.

High level: Km: 18, Walking duration : 7:00, Height differences : +600m/-1300m

Excursion to the extreme south of La Palma to discover the final part of the Volcano Route. From Los Canarios, you will head towards the Interpretation Center of the San Antonio Volcano. It is a very interesting center that is definitely worth a visit. It will also allow you to access the San Antonio Volcano (path along the ridge).Next, you will descend towards the Teneguía Volcano (eruption of 1971), where you will be impressed by its rich variety of colors and shapes in the lava flows. In the areas where ash falls, Malvasía grapes are cultivated, which produce excellent quality and renowned wines.
Upon reaching the extreme south, you will discover the lighthouse and the salt flats where excellent quality salt is produced. You will also find a small beach if you wish to cool off in the sea. Next to the salt flats, there is a bar/restaurant where you can take a break.
Then, you will return to Los Canarios by passing through the other side of the Teneguía cape. The landscapes are simply spectacular.

If you just want to walk down, that’s possible. Once you arrive at the lighthouse, buses connect it to Los Canarios.
