Trek La Gomera 7 days
This trek is based on 7 days, but its duration is flexible:
- it can be shortened to 5 or 6 days
- it can be extended up to 14 days
The difficulty level is flexible: moderate to challenging.
La Gomera, a small emerald in the Canary Islands archipelago, is adorned with surprising vegetation, rugged landscapes, and an authentic, tranquil, and welcoming soul.
Due to its mountainous character, La Gomera is much larger than one might imagine. It boasts numerous natural and cultural treasures. The island is home to the best-preserved and largest laurel forest in the Canary Islands. Its biodiversity is astonishing, with 4182 species identified in an area of only 370 km2. It has the highest percentage of endemism in the Canary Islands: 50% of the species. To preserve this exceptional nature, many protected natural areas have been established, such as the Garajonay National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Orone Protected Landscape, the Valle Gran Rey Rural Park, the Roque Cano Natural Monument, the Cabrito Canyon… Spectacular and diverse landscapes! Along the trails, you can discover and admire them. Its culture, inherited from the early inhabitants, is equally surprising: the “silbo gomero,” a whistled language also inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, its traditional music, gastronomy, and pottery made “without a wheel”… La Gomera is a concentration of nature and authenticity!
With its 650 km of trails (former communication routes of the islanders), La Gomera is a paradise for hikers! So, what better way to explore it than on foot!
Trek La Gomera 7 walking days
You can arrive in La Gomera on the morning of the first stage or the day before.
On this first day, a guide will accompany you to reveal the geological history of the island, as well as its botany and the age-old traditions of its inhabitants.
Begin your hike at the hermitage of “Las Nieves,” at the gates of Garajonay National Park. There, you will discover the impressive rocky pinnacles of “Los Roques.” Throughout this adventure, you will cross varied valleys, alternating between descents and ascents, each offering its own set of surprises and unique landscapes.
After exploring the natural monument of Los Roques, you will descend into the enchanting valley of Benchijigua, in the south of La Gomera, dominated by the majestic Roque de Agando. This valley, partially designated as a strict nature reserve, is home to a rich biodiversity with many endemic species. The hike will take you through various vegetation zones, offering a fascinating botanical exploration. In addition to its natural beauty, the valley offers some of the island’s most dazzling panoramas.
A timeless experience awaits with the discovery of the abandoned village of Benchijigua. The allure of this trail goes beyond nature itself. Explore a nearly forgotten village, frozen in time, with the picturesque church of San Juan—where an annual festive tradition endures during the feast of Saint John—as well as an old threshing floor, both testaments to the islanders’ timeless way of life.
Next, you will cross another valley before discovering the charming village of Imada, nestled in its palm grove in the heart of the mountains.
After passing through the Imada valley, you will reach the picturesque village of Alajeró, where you will spend the night.

Guarimiar est, sans aucun doute, le plus beau canyon du sud de La Gomera ! Ses paysages sauvages sont une caractéristique typique de l’île, offrant une expérience visuelle impressionnante.
Guarimiar is, without a doubt, the most beautiful canyon in the south of La Gomera! Its wild landscapes are a typical feature of the island, offering an impressive visual experience.
This canyon is both spectacular and fascinating from a geological point of view. Formed by volcanic activity and rain erosion, it reveals pyroclasts, basaltic flows, basaltic organs, and a deep and narrow ravine. It is the grand canyon of La Gomera, a place that tells the volcanic history of the island and has shaped its cultural identity.
To survive in this rugged terrain, the inhabitants built impressive agricultural terraces and developed the “silbo gomero” to communicate over long distances. This hike, which can be of high, medium, or easy level depending on your choice, takes you through the charming and less frequented Guarimiar canyon.
Throughout the route, you will pass through beautiful palm groves. In the upper part, near Imada, you will discover ancient terraces where almond trees grow. In February, when they are in bloom, the valley transforms into an even more beautiful spectacle. In the lower part, you will find tropical trees such as mangoes, avocado trees, and papayas, adding an exotic touch to this unforgettable experience.

This route, which partly follows the iconic GR131, allows visitors to discover some of La Gomera’s cultural, geological, and botanical gems. The Hike begins in Igualero, the highest village on the island, offering a charming and authentic starting point.
From there, the Hikers head towards the Alto de Garajonay, the island’s summit rising to 1487 meters. This point offers spectacular views of La Gomera and the neighboring islands, becoming an ideal spot to enjoy the natural beauty of the archipelago.
In the Orone natural area, visitors will also discover La Fortaleza, an imposing geomorphological formation that dominates the landscape. This mountain, with its majestic presence, accompanies the hikers during the second half of their journey, providing an impressive backdrop and a deep connection with the region’s geology.
Continuing along the route, the path leads the Hikers to Chipude, where they can admire the local traditional architecture. This village is a living testament to the island’s rich cultural heritage, with its buildings reflecting the history and customs of its inhabitants. This route is not only a journey through stunning landscapes but also an immersion in the history and culture of La Gomera.

Embark on a spectacular hike through the mountain villages, the Matanza canyon, to the impressive valley of Valle Gran Rey, classified as a rural park for the beauty of its traditional cultivation terraces.
You will take a trail that descends relatively gradually through the Matanza canyon towards the charming chapel of Gerían. During winter and spring, a stream flows, creating waterfalls and pools. In spring, this part of the trail is adorned with wildflowers. The pyramid-shaped mountain of the seer and the island of El Hierro will serve as a backdrop to these picturesque landscapes.
Next, the trail becomes steeper to enter the deep valley of Valle Gran Rey: cultivated terraces and palm groves dominate this stunning landscape.
This is a half-day hike that will leave you time to enjoy the beaches of Valle Gran Rey.

Starting on the opposite slope, your hike begins in the mountain farming villages, where traditional terracing bears witness to the region’s rich agricultural heritage. These terraces offer breathtaking views over the spectacular Valle Gran Rey rural park, with its deep valleys and stepped crops.
As you gradually ascend, you’ll be enveloped by the unique atmosphere of the ridge-top laurel forest. This enchanted forest, with its twisted trees covered in moss, seems to float on the trade winds. The frequent mist adds a touch of mystery and creates an almost otherworldly ambiance, making the experience truly magical.
You’ll also discover the laurisilva of the ravine bottoms and southern slopes, where tall trees rise majestically. While crossing the Las Creces area, you’ll encounter imposing Myrica faya trees, which dominate the landscape with their strong presence. Among the botanical treasures are ancient ferns and medicinal plants that have been used for generations. The fauna is just as fascinating, with birds like the “paloma rabiche” and “paloma turqué” adding life and color to the environment.
Next, you’ll descend the other side toward the stunning Vallehermoso valley—aptly named, as it means “the beautiful valley.” As you once again pass through different vegetation zones, you’ll come upon a place called “La Encantadora” (the Enchantress), a fitting name for this area, which holds the island’s largest water reservoir, nestled in the heart of a magnificent palm grove.
You’ll then reach the historic center of Vallehermoso. In the past, when the island relied on subsistence farming, this was the largest town on La Gomera. In the 1950s, it had four times as many inhabitants as it does today. Nevertheless, it has managed to retain its charm, and its main square remains a vibrant hub for locals.

During this stage in La Gomera, begin your hike toward Roque Cano, the iconic giant that watches over the peaceful town of Vallehermoso, once the island’s main city.
As you continue on your way, you’ll pass through a forest of giant heather trees, offering an immersive experience in lush nature.
Continue on to the Garajonay National Park Visitor Center—an enjoyable and informative stop that marks the start of the Medium level (N2). Then, if you opt for level 3 (High), you’ll reach the Abrante viewpoint, which overlooks the small village of Agulo and offers one of the most stunning panoramas on the island.
Next comes an impressive descent (High level) to reach the next village. Your hike will take you to the picturesque village of Agulo, considered the most charming on the island.
You’ll then cross the highest terraces on La Gomera—often taller than they are wide—before reaching Santa Catalina beach and the village of Hermigua. All of this unfolds against a breathtaking backdrop of the majestic Teide volcano on the island of Tenerife.

The Majona Natural Park is a haven of stunning landscapes and exceptional biodiversity.
From its heights, you can enjoy spectacular views of Mount Teide and the Atlantic Ocean. The park is known for its deep ravines, steep cliffs, and vegetation dominated by euphorbias in the lower areas, contrasting with the lush greenery of the higher zones.
The Cuevas Blancas hike, rated at a high level of difficulty, is one of the most captivating routes on La Gomera. This trail not only offers panoramic ocean views but also the chance to explore unique rock formations and natural caves that were once home to the island’s early inhabitants.
The route is a true journey into the past, leading you to Cuevas Blancas, a village of ancestral homes. This site, with its abundance of caves, radiates the charm of abandonment, with houses slowly crumbling over time. It’s a rewarding experience for those wishing to discover the traditional ways of life on the island and immerse themselves in its natural beauty.
A very high level option is also available, reserved only for those with excellent physical fitness and high endurance. This route is as beautiful as it is demanding!

(France)18 May, 2024 The tour of La Gomera with girlfriends"We discovered Audrey and her agency via the Routard. We quickly contacted her so that she could organize our tour of the island. Her response was also quick and efficient, which allowed us to book our accommodations. There were no problems and everything was perfect. We chose the long circuit and we did not regret it. Audrey sent us the hiking map that I was able to load onto Visorando. La Gomera is discovered as we walk, and the landscapes change depending on whether we are in the north, which is well-watered, or the south, which is much drier. Fabienne, known as Fafa, her colleague, accompanied us on the first and fourth days, giving us lots of details about the people and nature. It was really great, and I can only recommend the agency for its reliability and professionalism.
